SLDDRW Files: How SolidWorks Teams Share and Control Drawings

An SLDDRW file is a SolidWorks drawing — the 2D documentation that carries dimensions, tolerances, and revision blocks from design to production. It references the part or assembly it documents, so it breaks the same way assemblies do when files move.

And drawings travel further than any other SolidWorks file: to suppliers, machine shops, and quality teams who don't run CAD. Sibe gives them a browser view — free public share links and QR codes show the right revision to anyone, while version control keeps the drawing tied to its model.

This guide covers how to open and view SLDDRW files, and how teams keep drawings and revisions under control. No servers, no VPNs, no admin hassles.

What an SLDDRW File Is

An SLDDRW file is a SolidWorks drawing: 2D views generated from a part or assembly, plus the dimensions, tolerances, notes, and revision blocks manufacturing works from. It references the SLDPRT files or SLDASM files it documents — change the model and the drawing updates.

Like assemblies, drawings depend on their references. Move or rename the model behind a drawing and you'll open it to dangling views.

How to Open an SLDDRW File

1. In SolidWorks. File > Open — the full drawing with all sheets, as long as the referenced model resolves.

2. Without SolidWorks — eDrawings. Dassault's free viewer handles SLDDRW, but every supplier and reviewer has to install and update it.

3. In any browser with Sibe. Upload the drawing and share a free public link or QR code — the shop, the supplier, or the client opens it in the browser, on any device, with no CAD license and no account. Sibe's Web Dashboard also views DWG and DXF files, so 2D data stays in one place.

The Drawing Revision Problem

A drawing is a contract with the shop — and the most expensive file to get wrong. Parts get machined against superseded revisions every day because the current drawing lived in someone's inbox.

Sibe is a cost-effective Cloud CAD Document Management platform built for SolidWorks teams. Drawings check in and out directly in SolidWorks next to their models, version control records every revision automatically, and reviews happen on the drawing itself — reviewers comment in the browser, so the shop always sees the right version.

SLDDRW vs the Files Around It

SLDPRT — the part a drawing documents. See SLDPRT files.

SLDASM — the assembly behind multi-part drawings. See SLDASM files.

DWG / DXF — AutoCAD's 2D formats, the common currency of machine shops. See DWG files and DXF files.

1. Can I open slddrw files in AutoCAD?

Unfortunately, AutoCAD doesn’t natively support slddrw files. You’ll need to convert the file to a DWG format first.

2. Are there online tools to open slddrw files?

Yes. Upload the drawing to Sibe's Web Dashboard and it opens in any browser — no conversion, no account, and you can share it with a free public link or QR code.

3. What’s the easiest way to share slddrw files?

ASibesharelink.Therecipientopensthedrawinginthebrowserandalwaysseesthecurrentrevision—unlikeanexportedPDF,whichgoesstalethemomentthemodelchanges.

4. Does SolidWorks offer a free viewer?

Yes, eDrawings Viewer is a free application by Dassault Systèmes for viewing slddrw files.

5. Can I annotate slddrw files without SolidWorks?

Yes, annotation tools in eDrawings Viewer allow you to add comments or markups to these files.

6. Does slddrw support 3D models?

No, slddrw is strictly a 2D format. Use sldprt or sldasm for 3D models. 2D files require an 3D model to reference, however.

7. Is there a mobile app to view slddrw files?

Yes.ASibesharelinkopensinanymobilebrowser—reviewersseethedrawingonaphoneortabletwithnoappinstall.

8. Can I recover corrupted slddrw files?

Some dedicated recovery tools might work, but it’s better to retain backups to avoid data loss. This usually entails using SolidWorks and referencing the 3D model(s).

9. Are there alternatives to eDrawings Viewer?

Yes. Sibe views SLDDRW files in the browser with commenting and version history — a current alternative now that GrabCAD Workbench has been discontinued.

10. Are slddrw files suitable for 3D printing?

No, slddrw files lack the necessary 3D geometry for printing. Use sldprt or STL files instead.
